Tees for Change Founder, Andreea Ayers, explains how she is making a difference...one Tee at a Time

1.    Have you always been green?  What made you walk a path to green?
I’ve been somewhat green growing up, but I started to be more consistent with it when I graduated from college. Working for The Green Guide really opened my eyes to all the green products and options out there, and gave me good reasons to stay green. I learned a lot about pesticides, plastics, organic products and
sustainable food. To me, it made sense. And while organic food and products tend to be more expensive up front, you end up saving a lot on health care bills later on.
2.    When and why did you start Tees for Change?
I started Tee for Change in the Spring of 2007 when I was pregnant with my first baby. My husband and I wanted to have a home birth and we encountered a lot of negative reactions from different people. I started Tees for Change to remind myself to stay positive and to spread positivity to others as well!
3.    Tell me about the concept?
The idea is that ‘we become what we think about.’ If we fill our thoughts with positive, uplifting affirmations and if we have constant reminders, then we can train our mind to think good thoughts more often.
4.    Are your tees fair trade or made in the USA?
The tees are fair trade and made in a carbon neutral manufacturing facility in Turkey. We do have some tees that are made in the USA and we’re researching manufacturers in the US. I would like to move our entire production to the US within a few years.
5.    Do you have any tees for men, children or babies?
We have women’s and men’s tees. We used to have baby and children’s tees as well and we sold out of them very quickly. We might have them again in the future. Stay tuned!
6.    What do you hope to accomplish with your business?
I hope to be able to spread as many positive thoughts as possible! When someone buys and wears one of our shirts, that positive energy affects not only the person wearing the shirt, but also everyone else who sees the shirt. I would love to have a Tees for Change retail store front in NYC within the next few years as well.
7.    Can you give any advice to people wanting to start a green business?
Find a mentor and ask them lots of questions! Have a 1 year, a 3 year and a 5 year plan with specific goals.
8.    Anything else you would like to share with us?
For every tee we sell, we plant a tree through our partnership with Trees for the Future. To date, we’veplanted over 10,000 trees in Africa and South America.
9.    Why should people buy Tees for Change?
People usually buy our inspirational shirts because they want to express themselves! Also, the shirts are super soft and have a great fit, so you can look good, do good and feel good, all at the same time!
10.    Explain the name of your company?
When I was brainstorming ideas for the name, I wanted it to be relevant to the products we are selling. That’s where ‘tees’ came in. The word ‘change’ fits in because the shirts can change your mind, change your mood or change your attitude and you are also making an actual change each time you buy a shirt through our “Buy a tee, plant a tree campaign.”

  5. Very unique and creative. I wish the best for you and your campaign. Just make sure that the company you have given the contract to, actually plants and maintains those trees!
