I wonder why there are so many people saying that this bill is being backed by Monsanto and will indeed make it hard to farm organically?

I find it hard to believe in Eugenics, maybe I am not informed. I need to find time to really dig into this Bill.

Thanks Sylvie for stopping by.Shane Shirleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18047939354044095860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7083809953147059948.post-65691627547895393022009-03-31T01:35:00.000-04:002009-03-31T01:35:00.000-04:00Worth 10 minutes? They want to force farmers to use their seed, and disallow them from saving seeds.

They already own the patents to many seeds and genes. GMO = very scary business. They need to have the boot put down on them, or they will kill a lot of people. Gratefully, there are many seed banks that will prevent that from happening.

I got seeds from here they were pretty good - all sprouted well
http://www.heirloomseeds.com/

you can also go here and see what they have.
http://www.seedsavers.org/

There are many others.

There really are people out there who would like to do away with the bothersome poor of the world - they used to call this eugenics. They do not wish to do so through sustainable development.

Sustainable development would likely have the side effect of reducing populations in the poor world, because as people become more affluent they have fewer children. So, yes, sustainable development would probably reduce the overall population, but that would not be a bad thing or for a bad reason.

The Food Safety Modernization Act 2009 is not a bad bill. I've read the bill, and it's not oppressive to my mind. It's designed to try to help prevent salmonella and other food borne illnesses from reaching your table.

As is, the FDA can only step in after the event has happened, this bill gives them a role in helping prevent bad things from happening, accidents or intentional attacks. It should also provide safety guidelines to food processing establishments.

I suspect there is an astroturf-style (fake grassroots) PR campaign going on from Monsanto, ConAgra and friends to stop it from passing. Astroturfing happens, I know, it's a large part of how I keep a roof over my head.

The language in this bill is really not so loose as to prevent heritage seeds, and so on. As written it could actually reduce the number of chemicals used in growing food on factory farms.

FWIW, we live in a democracy, if it does wind up being too oppressive for smaller farmers, laws can always be changed. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. It has no impact on backyard gardens.

The text of the bill is here:
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-875

There's an article from The Daily Green on the bill here:
http://www.thedailygreen.com/healthy-eating/blogs/healthy-food/organic-farming-440320604

Sorry for writing a novel in your comments. I actually do worry about people starving, because of big agribusiness taking over the world. ;)Sylviehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15066057222847136675noreply@blogger.com
