3 Eco-Friendly Ways to Reduce Your Trash by Half

Live a More Eco-Friendly Life and Reduce Your Trash By Half - #WasteNotWantNot!

As part of my eco-friendly #WasteNotWantNot series over at Factory Direct Promos where I am CMO, I decided to look at trash, or more specifically ways to live a more eco-friendly life by reducing how much trash you generate. Garbage is a necessity and there is always going to be this by-product, but there doesn’t need to be so much of it. With some really minor changes you can easily go eco and reduce your trash by half.

Ford Set to Divert 5 Million Plastic Bottles From Landfills In 2015...Here's How

How Ford Rocks The F-150 With Recycled Bottles

You know I love Ford and here's just one more reason why. They walk the green talk and they are doing it again with the F-150. According to the EPA,  in 2012 about 32 million tons of plastic waste was generated in the United States. Out of that, only 9 percent of it was recovered. The folks at Ford started thinking about how they could redirect plastics from landfills into sustainable materials to use in their vehicles.

Since 2012, Ford Motor Company has worked with Unifi to bring environmentally responsible, high-performance REPREVE fiber to many Ford vehicles. Now, this innovative fiber is available in the in the all-new F-150. By substituting with this recycled material, Ford will divert more than five million plastic bottles from landfills this year!  Pretty impressive.

Ford is the only automaker to use REPREVE, made from 100 percent recycled materials including plastic bottles, in its vehicles. Ford is currently using REPREVE in five vehicles around the world, making it a truly global material, and it represents Ford's larger commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle as part of the company’s global sustainability strategy to lessen its environmental footprint.

What Do You Put In Your Reusable Bag? - Vine Video

What Do You Put in Your Reusable Bag?

by Christina Sidberry, EB Intern

"Paper or plastic?" This phrase, while commonly asked of consumers in the checkout lane, is missing the third, most efficient option, "Reusable?"

When considering the Reusable Bag, it is not uncommon to think that the fastest and easiest route to go is a single use plastic bag. In order to dispel this myth, I created the Vine video "What Do You Put in Your Reusable Bag?" for Factory Direct Promos to show just how important Reusable Bags are.

What is The Best Way to Clean Fruit and Vegetables? This Is The Easiest, Safest, and Greenest Way to Clean Vegetables!

This Is The Easiest, Safest, and Greenest Way to Clean Vegetables

You know I am all about sharing great tips on how you can reduce chemicals in your life from the foods we eat to the products we buy. I am always getting great tips from friends and online and this tip came from one of my 17 year old daughter's friends. I love that our tomorrow generation is looking for ways to live greener and I had to share this tip she found from the sustainable directory, Farmers Pal.

Although I hate the smell of vinegar, this tip leaves my fruits and veggies clean and actually has helped keep my berries from molding.

Here's How to Clean Your Fruit and Vegetables Quickly and Safely On The Cheap

Just fill your sink or a large pot with water and a cup of vinegar (you can use a little less vinegar depending on the amount of fruits or vegetables you need to clean) and gently stir them around a bit. Then just let them sit in the water and vinegar for about 10 minutes, rinse, and you are all done. No more dirt, wax, or residue.

Easy peasy, lemon squeezy green tip for the week. :)

How Can We Bring the World to Net Zero? This Infographic Will Tell You

No matter your thoughts on whether human's carbon emissions are the only contributing factor to climate change, I know one thing, businesses must take the lead in reducing their emissions and consumers must follow. Offsets are one way to help but until businesses get serious about doing their part, we will not make the progress we need to slow climate change and protect our health.

Do You Stop Learning When You Leave School?

All three of my girls are back to school and I, along with millions of other moms and dads out there, am breathing a collective sigh of relief.  If you listen you can hear it. It is the sound of structure for the kids and a home office for me free of Barbies and dancing and hula-hoop hooping and noisy iPad apps that miraculously generate their own charges on my iTunes account.  It is the sound of silence and I am loving it.

I also love that just because we aren't kids in school anymore, that doesn't mean that we can't keep learning and educating ourselves.  Right?

What Are Your Reasons To Continue Your Education

There aren't too many days that go by when we don't learn something new just in the normal day to day people we encounter and the experiences we have.  And I, for one, hope I never stop learning and educating myself on everything I can possibly expose myself to.  I never want to become one of those people who thinks they know it all or worse yet, are too busy, tired or depressed to care about learning anything new.

Here's a Little Green Education for Your Takeaway Today

Obviously I am into educating folks on how to be green and today I am going to teach green in graphics.  I am CMO for Factory Direct Promos and I really love working with them because we work together to spread the green message.  Factory Direct Promos creates customized,  eco-friendly solutions to the traditional promotional products which can harm the planet.

Factory Direct Promos makes reusable bags from recycled plastic bottles, memorable seed business cards that sprout into wildflowers, eco drinkware and many other innovative, eco-friendly promotional items businesses, associations, non-profits and schools should use.  Their client list includes Home Depot, The Salvation Army and Marriott among many others.

Take a look below and tell me if you don't feel smarter about how to be green with just a two minute, eco-friendly Infograohic lesson called "Why Reuse a Cup?"  Share on Facebook and Twitter and click the image and you can help us spread the green ed by copying the code onto your company or personal blog or website!  I want the fast food restaurants of the world to hear this message because it is pathetic that they are contributing to this mess when they could be leading the way to a more sustainable tomorrow!

5 Hilarious Environmental Videos to Tickle Your Eco-Friendly Funny Bone, Give You the Green Giggles and Change The World

5 Hilarious Environmental Videos to Tickle Your Eco-Friendly Funny Bone, Give You the Green Giggles and Change the World

I don't know about you, but these days I can use all of the green giggles I can get.  Not only is trying to live an eco-friendly, green lifestyle sometimes difficult - my family wants to hide under tables at restaurants as I pull my eco-friendly containers out of my purse for my leftovers, my husband wonders why we have to pay three times as much to eat eggs from chickens who are allowed to run free and my girlfriends are still left wondering why I won't allow my kids to eat Skittles - but if you haven't noticed, the world seems to be going to hell in a hand basket.  Looking outside of our little corner of the world here in Mickey's Magical Kingdom, that is Orlando, I am reminded of how many people are hungry, homeless and alone.  I think many of us are left wondering...
Where are the answers to the most pressing social, economic and environmental concerns of our time?
Perhaps the answers are quite simple.  Perhaps the changes we desire to create on a large, worldwide scale could begin with a smile.  Take a few minutes to put down the stress, unpack your worries and laugh a little with me.  Just press play, giggle a little and then pass your smile on.  Find as many ways as you possibly can to create a happier, better corner of your world.  Who knows, it might be contagious enough to catch on and create not only a better you, but a better me too.

Now go get your smile on...

Did your favorite school make the list?
The Princeton Review – known for its educational services which help guide students entering college – reported this week on its fourth annual green ratings of colleges.  The green ratings are a measure of how environmentally friendly the schools are on a scale of 60 to 99.  The Company tallied the green ratings for 768 colleges based on its institutional surveys of schools in 2010-11.  The surveys covered questions concerning their environmentally related practices, policies and academic offerings.  Out of the colleges given green ratings, 16 colleges received the highest green rating score of 99 and made The Princeton Review 2012 Green Rating Honor Roll.
