Every Family Needs a Farmer...USDA's Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Initiative

Our US Government seems to be getting some things right lately.  Have you heard of the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Initiative?  It is a USDA sponsored program with four basic goals:
  1. Support local farmers

  2. Strengthen rural communities

  3. Promote healthy eating

  4. Protect natural resources

According to their website,
this is an "important effort to create new economic opportunities by better connecting consumers with local producers. It is also the start of a national conversation about the importance of understanding where your food comes from and how it gets to your plate. Today, there is too much distance between the average American and their farmer and we are marshalling resources from across USDA to help create the link between local production and local consumption."

Check it out and take time to think about where your food really comes from.  How can you  make efforts to get back to basics and in turn, create a more wholesome, healthy eating lifestyle for yourself and your family?

PS - I ran across an article that tells about a recent announcement from the USDA that it will be giving out $19 million in grant money for organic research in conjunction with the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative.  You can check out the article HERE.  :)
