How the Green Chemistry Geeks at Berkeley are Creating a Healthier Future for Consumers by Creating Safer, Greener Chemicals...Dow Chem Co. Are You Listening?

It is no secret that I think chemical companies are to blame for much of the illness that is afflicting consumers today and don't even get me started on what they have done to our environment; sometimes knowingly. Still, there are great, green glimmers of hope for consumers! As more studies point to the chemicals in consumer products as culprits to the illness epidemic in today's society, chemists are finding their way to cleaner, greener chemicals which will result in safer products for all of us.

I am in love with what the Berkeley Chemistry Geeks (along with other disciplines) are doing to help the chemical industry go green through marketing products which are more sustainably produced, less toxic and recyclable. Plus the my daughter and I liked watching the cutie pie chemist in the videos below. Seriously, if my 14 year old was into finding out how her future will be healthier as a consumer, I kind of think you will get something out of watching the following videos too. I just wonder if Dow Chemical Company is listening.

“Green chemistry involves discovering and implementing chemical processes and products that are safer, cleaner and more efficient,” said John Arnold, professor of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, and director of the campus’s Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry (BCGC), which hosts its first national conference on Thursday, March 24.  The event is sold out.

“The Berkeley Center for Green Chemistry has created a multidisciplinary team that represents all aspects of chemistry, from research and development to consumers and the environment,” he added. “Through research, education and engagement, we aim to facilitate change by embedding the principles of green chemistry into science, markets and public policy.”  Did you get that?  They want to have an impact not only on science and what we consumers are sold, they also want to impact public policy.  Bravo!

It is just flippin fantastic that chemists, and other scholars of our times, who will be helping to shape consumer's future health, are looking at ways to create things like safer plastics and petroleum based food dyes to benefit us and our planet.  For the rest of the story, please run over to the Berkeley site and check out the entire article. The future of green chemistry is such positive, green news and I really hope you will share it with the folks you know!!  Let us know in the comments below of any company you have come across which is working to create safer products for consumer...
