Sending My Love to Disney and Asking Them to Be a Leader In Toxic Chemical Reform

I Love the Mouse and Know They Won't Let Us Down This Valentine's Day and Beyond!

I have told you before about my green girl Lori from Groovy Green Livin' and her mega petition right? Well to catch those of you up to speed that may have missed the news, Lori and over 60,000 consumers signed a petition asking Disney to remove toxic, hormone disrupting chemicals from their kid's princess and Spiderman lunch boxes. Well can you believe that Disney has not even responded to the petition?

I love my neighbor, Mickey Mouse, who is just 20 minutes down the road from were I live but their lack or a response to this issue bums me out to say the least.  I worked at Disney during college, many of my neighbors are employed there, my kids are always there, I can hear the BOOM of the fireworks each night and we can even see them if we go to the lake in our neighborhood. They feel like family. Still, this Valentine’s Day we are asking my beloved Disney to have a heart when it comes to toxic chemicals and we need your help.

Disney, Don't Let Us Down, Be a Leader!

Did you know that Disney is the largest licenser of consumer products in the world and a recent investigation found that many Disney branded school supplies are filled with high levels of toxic phthalates?  Phthalates are so toxic they’ve been banned in toys and have been linked to hormone disruption, asthma, birth defects and ADHD.

Unfortunately, because school supplies like the princess and Spiderman lunch boxes are not classified as toys, they are not subject to the laws that would protect kids from these toxic chemicals. Maybe I am too naive but I doubt +Disney had any idea about the toxic chemicals in their products before Lori's petition.

The reality is that it is not only consumers that are put at risk with current, ineffective chemical laws, it is businesses as well. This my friends is why I am hosting a business forum on safe chemicals in Orlando next month at UCF Pegasus Health with Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families and why we need to pass the Safe Chemicals Act.

Disney, will you join us at the forum in Orlando and be a leader in the fight to pass the Safe Chemicals Act?

Consumers TAKE ACTION: Send a Valentine to Disney and show your affection for a healthier world. Here’s how:
  • Check out Lori's post and choose a pre-made Valentine sign to Disney, print it out and take a photo like I did above.
  • Feel free to make your own, or decorate it with your favorite Valentines Day flare.
  • Take a picture of you, your family, your pet, with the sign using your camera or phone.
  • Email your photo to disneyvalentine@chej.org and Lori and her friends at the Center for Health, Environment & Justice (CHEJ) will send it on to Disney.
  • Then pat yourself on the back because you are a green rock star!

P.S.- People always ask me where I get my organic food and personal care products and I love to tell them about The Green PolkaDot Box! Backed by the Organic Consumer's Association and EnvironmentalBooty.com, you can easily buy NonGMO organic groceries, including Harvest Fresh Organic produce, at wholesale pricing online.  It's like a Sam's club but focused on products for green, healthy living! You can even shop by dietary restrictions like gluten free, vegan or diabetic and it all comes right to your front door. Enjoy!
