Renault-Nissan Alliance Partners with Mitsubishi to Bring Affordable, Small Size Electric Vehicle to Consumers

Consumers have to be sitting on the edge of their seats after hearing recent news that the Renault-Nissan alliance has partnered with Mitsubishi to pool technology and create a global Electric Vehicle (EV) model that could change the game for consumers.

Nissan and Mitsubishi have an existing joint venture company called NMKV which was established in June of 2011 but in adding Mitsubishi to the mix, price can be a game changer for Renault-Nissan and consumers in a partnership that adds existing design appeal that Mitsubishi lacks.

If I have been asked once I have been asked a hundred times, "When will an affordable EV that I really want to buy be on the market?" I have asked Ford's Mulally this question face to face and got nothing but a pat answer that basically reiterated that as technology becomes mainstream, prices will drop.

But with gas prices rising, do consumers have time to wait for an EV that is positioned not only in price but design and distance as well?

Consumers Expect More and Partnership Will Deliver

Renault and Nissan are already firmly entrenched in the Electric Vehicle (EV) market with the Renault Twizy and the Nissan Leaf holding positions in the Top 10 EV's. Mitsubishi, although affordable at under $30,000 on the other hand, sold a paltry 127 i electric cars in April of this year and can certainly benefit from the partnership. Mitsubishi may already deliver on price in the EV market, but they certainly do not deliver on style.

Global cars have become a buzz word in the car industry but more importantly, the brands that can leverage the technology to produce green cars like EV's that are not only affordable, but deliver on miles, performance and sex appeal will position themselves to be leaders in the EV market. This partnership between Renault-Nissan and Mitsubishi could be the answer consumers have been looking for.

Consumers expect not only affordable vehicles in the green space but cars that look hot globally and deliver on distance with a package of affordability that can make even the most discriminating car buyer a happy camper.  Consumers can also drive a greener road to an affordable deal on car insurance with The Green Insurance Company. This partnership can fill in the blanks for all involved and benefit consumers on a global level.

Mitsubishi Falls Short and Needs More Gusto

Consumers want the full monty in their EV's right?  They expect not only a delicious package but performance that delivers distance and reliability that so far, Mitsubishi has been unable to deliver. The partnership between Renault-Nissan and Mitsubishi will perhaps be the answer affordable all-in- one model that consumers have been looking for.

Nissan with their design savvy Leaf and Renault with their affordable but range anxiety inducing Twizy have proven they have the pieces to put together an EV package consumers are into but globally consumers are looking for those benefits in an affordable, all-in-one package.

Perhaps this partnership with Mitsubishi will deliver on design, performance, and price that will help the average consumer who does not have $40,000 to spend on an EV but who wants more than the $30,000 Mitsubishi i had to offer.

Partnership to Deliver on Price, Distance, and Design

The collaboration between Renault-Nissan and Mitsubishi means that both technologies and manufacturing capacity will be shared. One project between the car manufacturers will see a new small car co-developed by Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors. The basis of this project will be a jointly developed 'Kei car' platform, and a specific electric version will also be designed.

The manufacturers sharing technologies and product assets relating to low carbon emissions emitting cars will most certainly hit the mark with consumers concerned with rising gas prices - especially if the design is appealing to a global buyer.
