Is Your Business Giving Consumers What They Want in Ads?

In a world where people can change their ad preferences and use ad blockers so that they can't see ads altogether, one might say digital advertising has become a daunting task.

Our lives have become so consumed with ads, it's become hard to get a break from them without having to go to extremes.

This leads me to my point, the secret to digital advertising is to make your ads feel less like ads.

Let me explain...

The Most Annoying Types of Ads

Thanks to research done by the people at Hubspot, we can get an understanding of what types of digital ads people think are most annoying.

Out of the 302 people randomly surveyed, they found that 58% said that in fact, pop-up ads that disrupt their web experience were their least favorite type of ad.
Out of the (relatively) small sampling of 302 people randomly surveyed, Hubspot found that 58% of respondents said that in fact, pop-up ads that disrupt their web experience were their least favorite type of ad.

I have left numerous web pages before a purchase because of poorly timed pop-up ads. But don't get confused, the solution to this problem isn't to stop using pop-ups or running ads altogether!

Digital advertising is a necessity for businesses in 2021. And there are ways to create ads that will not annoy your audience while still increasing sales.

How To Navigate Your Way to Increasing Sales With Pop-up Ads

Now, like I mentioned before due to their bad reputation, poorly timed pop-up ads are typically closed and forgotten about the moment they appear.

The secret to converting these types of ads is in the placement and timing, not necessarily the content.

There are many benefits to pop-up ads such as their ability to grab attention, improve conversion rates, and the ability to showcase whatever messaging you'd like. But you will only see benefits if pop-ups and all of your digital ads are created and placed correctly.

Displaying your ads in ways that cause your users to have a bad UX (user experience) will not help your brand or business at all and is a huge waste of money and effort.

A great way to take a step back and evaluate your digital ads and pop-ups' performance is to perform a digital marketing audit

What Consumers Actually Want From Your Ads

When planning your ads from start to finish, you must plan them keeping the user experience in mind. I always like to say plan the ad so that you could benefit from it or put yourself in the shoes of the audience.

For example, in reference to pop-up ads, most of the time the hate stems from their tendencies to be disruptive to user experience. But this really just boils down to timing, most users want what you have to offer, they just hate to be interrupted. So try to change when the ad appears.

A few more great rules of thumb when it comes to all ads are to keep your ads short and to the point, don't be too invasive with targeting (one of the mantras at our company), and find the right balance in ad frequency.
