10 Inspirational Marketing Quotes from 10 of The Greatest Athletes of All Times

Athletes and entrepreneurs. Though the two mindsets may not immediately strike the average person as being incredibly similar, if not one and the same, the career paths are actually a lot more alike than you might think.

Both paths require extreme amounts of passion, dedication, and sacrifice in order to get to the top, as well as patience and expertise. But in both fields of work, none of the aforementioned can happen overnight.

Listed below are 15 quotes from the GOATs (Greatest Of All Time) of their respective sports to help inspire your team on the road to becoming marketing champions.

10 Marketing Quotes from 10 Sports GOATs

  1. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” - No. 99, Wayne Gretzky (Hockey)

You’ve heard this quote 1,000 times, whether it be on an inspirational poster or on a cheesy coffee mug.

But what’s the true origin behind the famous quote?

It’s most commonly attributed to Wayne Gretzky (out of a variety of interesting people), though Gretzky actually credits the quote to his father, Walter.

This quote doesn’t just relate to deciding to go for a slapshot goal with 10 seconds left on the scoreboard when your team is down by one point. It also refers to looking for the best possible outcomes and pursuing them, even if your chances seem slim. It can even mean going out on a limb, starting a new business, or pursuing new clients.

Mastering this form of positivity can take time, but with the help of Shane Shirley Media, you can be sure we’re your defensemen every step of the way.

  1. You have to believe in your process. You have to believe in the things that you are doing to help the team win. I think you have to take the good with the bad.”- No. 12, Tom Brady (American Football)

This quote has it all. And coming from the man with more Super Bowl rings than anyone else in NFL history, you’d better believe it all to be true.

Putting in the work for your team and doing your part is hugely important. And it’s just as vital to acknowledge that even if the results aren’t immediate, your hard work will pay off. Just keep going at it, and accept it’s perfectly okay to not be infallible. (Like a certain Burrow or Brady alike.)

A belief in yourself and your teammates is essential, so remember that success is within reach!

  1. It doesn't matter what your background is or where you come from, if you have dreams and goals, that's all that matters.” - Serena Williams (Tennis)

Whether your current business is your endgame or not, goals and dreams are driving forces for most business owners and employees. Translating that same passion to your team is important.

Keeping in mind that even if you come from a background that isn’t typical for your field, you can still succeed greatly, is huge.

Breaking barriers and proving them all wrong will feel amazing!

  1. “You can’t let one bad moment spoil a bunch of good ones.” - No. 3, Dale Earnhardt (NASCAR®)

Victory is sweet, but that doesn’t mean it’s not alright or expected to have a few DNFs (Did Not Finish) every once in a while.

Relatively straightforward, this quote essentially preaches the mindset of accepting and appreciating your losses. This is because as soon as you do this, moving on and cherishing your wins becomes so much easier.

Didn’t get the client? Didn’t reach your wanted demographic? There’s always next time, so don't linger on mistakes, learn from them!

  1. “Don’t count the days; make the days count.” - Muhammad Ali (Boxing)

This quote reminds us to take things one day at a time. Meaning, stop waiting until that one great big thing happens and just be present and in the moment.

Everything will end up fine if you just focus on the job in front of you with good intentions and appreciation for everything around you.

Make every day in its own right count. Before you know it, you’ll be knocking out all your goals one at a time.

  1. It is my conviction that there are no limits to learning, and that it can never stop, no matter what our age." - No. 7, Cristiano Ronaldo (Soccer/Football)

The consensus on who is the GOAT of soccer/football is possibly one of the most debated of all time. There is not one firm answer out of options such as Pelé, Messi, and Ronaldo.

But the above quote from this Manchester United player is, without doubt, a valuable addition to this list.

As I’ve stated before, the willingness to learn is paramount, no matter your industry or your age. There’s always something new you can benefit from, and in terms of business, it could be the difference between being stuck in the middle of the field or rising to the top.

  1. “In order to help people, you have to first learn how to help yourself.” - Tiger Woods (Golf)

Just like so many businesses out there, marketing is all about helping people. But in order to do so and put your best foot forward, you have to remember to take care of yourself!

A well-rested team does better than one that has been worked beyond the brink of exhaustion, so consider your own needs as well as those around you. Take it from Tiger, it’s a worthy piece of advice.

  1. “No matter how much you try or what you say, people aren’t going to fully understand you or where you’re coming from. You just have to get used to being misunderstood.” - Ronda Rousey (MMA)

A struggle many small business owners, especially those working in the digital landscape, face, is having to tirelessly describe to family members, friends, and potential clients what you do. And sometimes, people just won’t get it.

If they don’t, don’t take it personally, and don’t sweat it!

If they are a friend or family member, chances are they still want to support you, even if from afar. As for clients, if they can’t seem to appreciate your value, let them go. Cut the losses!

Let us have your back, let us collaborate, and let your success speak for you.

  1. “You must expect great things [from] yourself before you can do them.” - No. 23, Michael Jordan (Basketball)

How do you expect to achieve greatness if you don’t convince yourself that you can?

Though a team effort is necessary the majority of the time, you won’t be able to formulate said team without a basis of belief in yourself.

Jordan was able to turn the Chicago Bulls into a dominating force within the NBA when he was drafted in ‘84. And by ‘91, he had led the team to their first-ever NBA championship. But aside from that, he personally only had a minuscule 13 games out of his extensive career where he scored less than 10 points.

If he hadn’t expected such greatness from himself, where would he have ended up?

Where will you and your team end up if you do believe in yourselves and what’s possible?

        10. “Once something is a passion, the motivation is there.” - No. 7, Michael Schumacher (Formula 1® Racing)

Between the drivers Schumacher, Hamilton, Senna, Fangio, and Vettel, there’s more than a fair share of possible GOATs that Formula 1 racing has brought to light. So even though the one true GOAT is up for debate, it is cardinal to consider the different generations of cars and technology in them. If they had the same car, how would a racer from the 50s like Fangio, compare to one from this current generation, such as Hamilton?

With all of this information, how can there be a consensus on the one true great? Or in marketing, how could there be a consensus on the best course of action for your business?

In the end, it comes down to Schumacher’s quote.

How? Well, it’s really quite simple.

Though success has a million and one contributing factors, when it comes down to it, passion drives innovation, and preference drives passion. In business, you’ll always have someone who prefers one form of marketing over the other, or pushes for one process over the other.

But at the end of the day, there is no wrong way to do it or one that’s better than the other. As long as you set your goals, formulate a strategy, and just go for it, you will make it to the checkered flag first.

Essentially, let passion be your motivation, and the rest will come along just fine. (If not without a little help from your mates at SSM.)
