5 Critical Things I Didn't Know Before I Worked In Digital Marketing

Guest Post by Hayden-Jay B. Smith, SSM Intern

The world of digital marketing can be intimidating. Trust me, I know. The intimidation can leave you not wanting to explore any of the ways it could benefit your business.

I felt similarly intimidated about digital marketing before working in the industry. But as I've spent more time in it, I've learned quite a bit.

With the help of this blog post, you will be feeling more confident about the ins and outs of digital marketing and be ready to increase leads online.

So without further ado, here are (in no particular order) five critical things I didn't know before I worked in digital marketing.

5 Things I've Learned In Digital Marketing

1.  Canva Is Your Best Friend

Not a designer? Canva is a platform where you can produce media for literally any social media site you can think of.

The banner for this blog post? Canva. The Twitter post which you may have come to this post from? Canva.

Canva makes it easier for you to create clean and professional graphics that are beautiful. They have templates where you simply add your text and logo, or you can start from scratch. Either way, using Canva makes it easier to post regularly to your social media accounts and attract customers.

2.  Things Are Glitchy, It Happens

There have been too many times where I've tried to transfer an image to a website, and the image (which was perfectly fine only moments ago) suddenly is too small or too pixilated. There have also been too many times, where I was writing the copy for a post, and the website I'm writing on will reload by itself and delete the whole thing!

Moral of the story, things glitch. It won't be the first time it happens, and it won't be the last. So don't stress over it!

It's out of your control, so the best thing you can do is just keep your cool and hope for the best. (Or, let Shane Shirley Media handle it so you don't have to.)

3. Organic Traffic Is Valuable

When it comes to digital marketing, and working to get traffic to your website, there's the traffic you pay to get directed to your site, and then there's traffic that Google gives you for free.

This is known as "organic traffic".

Google, or any browser, will send you traffic for any number of reasons. But, in order to increase leads online, there are a variety of things you can do to increase and optimize that traffic.

And this brings us to the next critical thing I have learned.

4. Search Engine Optimization Is An Important Tool

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the best way to get ranked in search results.

SEO is composed of 7 different tactics used in order to get found online. There are two different kinds of SEO, including Local SEO, as well as traditional SEO.

Traditional SEO is what helps you rank nationally or globally in search results for your keywords or search terms.

Local SEO is what helps you be the top business in your area when customers search "Near me", while all SEO is to help you beat your competitors and increase leads online.

5. Managing All of Your Social Media Accounts Can Be Difficult

Before working in digital marketing, I never quite understood how challenging, and how time-consuming it can be to run all of the different social media accounts.

I am in awe of our team.

There is a lot to keep track of when it comes to social media. Our team makes sure that each post is tailored to each client and platform, and that everything is posted at the perfect time for optimization.

When you put into the mix the likes of Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and even Google Business Profile Manager, it can be quite overwhelming.

Still Confused? Let Us Handle It.

After doing this for quite a bit (not to mention the team at Shane Shirley Media helping over 10,000 customers since 2008) I can safely say that although I am still learning, I'm comfortable asking for help when I need it.

If you could use some help, no shame! Fill out the form below and let the term at Shane Shirley Media handle it.
