How to Be Green? Ditch Earth Day

Earth as Art- Florida Everglades. Description: Spanning the southern tip of the Florida Peninsula and most of Florida Bay, Everglades National Park is the only subtropical preserve in North America. It is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles exist side by side.

Do We Really Need Earth Day Anymore?

This past Monday, Earth Day 2013, I was left with a feeling of, well, quite frankly, sadness in my heart.  What used to be one of my favorite days of the year, this year turned into a stream of emails into my inbox from the likes of Staples, American Eagle and too many PR firms to mention all touting their sales and promotions for Earth Day.  Now while I am a capitalist at heart and do not begrudge those trying to make a buck (believe me), this year it somehow left a bad taste in my mouth.

Plastic Free: How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too, by Beth Terry Helps Us All Be Green

I live in awe of Beth Terry and I think once you meet her, you will too.  If you don't know who she is, check out her blog, My Plastic Free Life and you will find a site that is dedicated to helping the rest of the world kick the petroleum based, lifetime of waste, killer plastic habit.  What you won't see is the woman I have come to know as a caring soul who was raised by a family that strengthened who she was meant to be from a very young age allowing her to make the impact she is making on mankind.

The Washington Post says Beth Terry's new book is "really, really, really earnest, and yet . . . it’s also practical and hopeful, with a kind of cheerleading charm."  I say it is a necessary read on the road to a greener lifestyle.

Come with me as I chat with Beth Terry and get a taste of a plastic free, greener lifestyle.

New ACEEE Report Reveals Secret to Thriving Economy Through Long Term Energy Efficiency

A new report from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) says America is thinking too small when it comes to energy efficiency.  To make things worse, the ACEEE says that Americans are also making the mistake of concentrating on investing in risky and expensive bids to develop new energy sources, while risking the health of our economy by largely ignoring investments in energy savings and efficiencies.  According to the new ACEEE report, simply cutting energy use by 60% by 2050 could generate 2 million jobs and save the equivalent of $2600 per household each year.

The new report argues that it is time for the United States to grasp onto its long-term energy efficiency potential which will greatly benefit the flailing US economic recovery and future health of the economy.  Titled The Long-Term Energy Efficiency Potential:  What the Evidence Suggests, the new ACEEE report outlines three scenarios under which the U.S. could either continue on its current path or cut energy consumption by the year 2050 by almost 60 percent, add nearly two million net jobs in 2050, and save energy consumers as much as $400 billion per year.

What is Fracking? Stephen Colbert Explains The Anti Frack Attacks!

I am not a huge fan of Stephen Colbert but after watching this video I wonder why.  In just a few minutes, Stephen Colbert explains the entire fracking debate.  Okay so obviously he isn't giving a scientific lecture on the benefits and negatives of fracking.   In his famously facetious way, Colbert makes it engaging to think about what a horrid thing fracking is and this spurs people to action.  I say...

Thinking of Going Green? 5 Ways Rediscovering the Bicycle is a Great Place to Begin, or Continue, Your Green Journey!

We all learned to ride one as a child, but then sometime after we turned sixteen, most of us abandoned that sleek two-wheeled bicycle in favor of a car. If you are thinking about going green, here are 5 green facts to show you that rediscovering the bicycle is a great way to begin, or continue, your green journey.

Beyond going green, people choose to ride bicycles for many different reasons: it could be to save money on the commute to work, for fitness (instead of driving to the gym to use an electric stationary bike), or to visit a friend in the neighborhood. Whatever the reasons for choosing to ride your bike, the choice favorably impacts not only your health but environmental health as well!

Riding a bicycle will:
