How to Be Green? Ditch Earth Day

Earth as Art- Florida Everglades. Description: Spanning the southern tip of the Florida Peninsula and most of Florida Bay, Everglades National Park is the only subtropical preserve in North America. It is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles exist side by side.

Do We Really Need Earth Day Anymore?

This past Monday, Earth Day 2013, I was left with a feeling of, well, quite frankly, sadness in my heart.  What used to be one of my favorite days of the year, this year turned into a stream of emails into my inbox from the likes of Staples, American Eagle and too many PR firms to mention all touting their sales and promotions for Earth Day.  Now while I am a capitalist at heart and do not begrudge those trying to make a buck (believe me), this year it somehow left a bad taste in my mouth.

Latest News on Project Runway Winner, Christian Siriano [video] - His Take on Creating a Greener Fashion Footprint and Bringing Eco-Fashion to the Masses

Bravo's Youngest Project Runway Winner, Christian Siriano, Has The Answer To Creating a Greener Fashion Footprint and Bringing Eco-Fashion to the MassesBravo's Youngest Project Runway Winner, Christian Siriano, Has The Answer To Creating a Greener Fashion Footprint and Bringing Eco-Fashion to the Masses

Christian Siriano's Fall line for Payless will be in stores this August
Recently, while I was in Detroit for the Go Further with Ford Motors event, I had the true pleasure of getting to talk with Christian Siriano, the youngest winner of one of my daughters' favorite shows, Bravo's Emmy nominated competition series, Project Runway.  Designer Siriano (@csiriano on Twitter) was extremely kind and accessible, especially compared to  Adrian Grenier, and I was delighted to be able to ask him one of my most burning eco questions.  How can we green the fashion industry's footprint to bring eco-fashion to the masses at an affordable price point?

Designer Siriano has already partnered with Payless Shoe Source to bring a line of super sexy and hot high end looking shoes to the masses and he recently met with the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to discuss ways the fashion industry can make less of an impact on the environment to create a greener fashion footprint.  Plus, as he was born in 1985, he was raised in an era where kids have had greening the environment incorporated into their school curriculum as well as their media.  I thought designer Siriano was the perfect person to ask about greening the fashion industry for all.

Here was his answer...

Dutch Company Pal-V Creates Flying Car of My Dreams! The Future of Transportation is Here but Just How Green is this Flying Machine?

The Dutch government is already preparing for the Pal-V One

When I was a child, the one thing I wanted to do more than anything was fly.  You know, like a bird.  Now I have issues with flying and certainly do not enjoy it.  Still, I have a very vivid dream life and a recurring dream that I experience, aside from some pretty amazing dreams that rival E.L. James' Fifty Shades series - but that's another post, is that I am flying in a car.  I also go into the ocean in a car in my dreams and float around but the flying bird dream just got pretty real.

Meet the Pal-V One, the flying car of my dreams...the future of transportation is here but just how green is this flying machine?

WASHINGTON (May 30, 2012) – In a move that protects consumers, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today denied a Corn Refiners Association (CRA) petition to rename high-fructose corn syrup “corn sugar,” saying the action would only serve to confuse U.S. consumers and could even pose a health risk to those suffering from fructose intolerance.

Learn How to Go Green and Live Bottled Water Free with Laura Newton, The Water Filter Lady

Sponsored post by the Water Filter Lady

Want to Go Green and Learn How to Live Bottled Water Free?  Meet The Water Filter Lady, Laura Newton and Get Her Top 3 Tips to Stop Using Bottled Water

The Water Filter Lady, AKA Laura Newton, knows a thing or two about safe, pure, clean water.  Not a huge fan of bottled water, she can help anyone learn how to live bottled water free. Laura is dedicated to providing consumers with better water, better health, and a better lifestyle.

Laura tells me that the good news is that drinking bottled water is not as popular as it once was, "These days there is an awareness by consumers that bottled water is not the best thing to purchase for many reasons."

Today's consumers have a true desire to live more sustainably.   Those environmental concerns, along with health concerns, spurred by social media and news reports of chemicals leaching out of the bottles and into the water, are now becoming commonplace discussions among consumers.

You can link up with the discussion on The Water Filter Lady's Facebook Fanpage or on Twitter

To build on consumer awareness of the negative side of bottled water, Laura suggests that consumers watch the mind-blowing movie Tapped.

"Tapped examines the role of the bottled water industry and its effects on our health, climate change, pollution, and our reliance on oil. The documentary is well structured and presents an overwhelming amount of evidence which will change the way anyone thinks about bottled and municipal water." - Laura Newton, The Water Filter Lady

If Watching the Movie Tapped Doesn't Get You Ready to Live Bottled Water Free, Here are The Water Filter Lady's Top 3 Reasons to Stop Using Bottled Water:

  1. Plastic bottles take up to 1000 years to bio-degrade! The Container Recycling Institute says that plastic water bottles are disposed of (not recycled) at the rate of 30 million a day. 88% of empty plastic water bottles in the United States are not recycled.
  2. Save Money. Bottled water is expensive. If you are still drinking bottled water because your tap water is unsafe, the solution could be as simple as purchasing a quality home water filter.  You can check out an easy comparison of water filters on my site.
  3. Bottled water is no safer than filtered tap water. Some bottled water is simply tap water bottled and sold.  A study conducted by the Goethe University at Frankfurt found that a high percentage of bottled water, contained in plastic containers, were polluted with estrogenic chemicals. Although some of the bottled water contained in glass were found polluted with chemicals as well, the researchers believe some of the contamination in the plastic containers may have come from the plastic containers themselves.
You can watch the full length version of the must see movie Tapped, find out how you can test your water for contaminants and enter to win a Multipure Aquadome water filter at The Water Filter Lady's Blog.

"Water is the most precious resource on earth"

In many areas of the United States the supply of clean fresh water is becoming scarce. At the same time water treatment plants are being overloaded. Yet everyday, each home sends thousands of gallons of graywater to the water treatment plant which could be safely used to irrigate the landscape of your home.

Gray-2-Green offers components and systems that allow graywater to be collected and used to irrigate the landscape of the home, reducing the demand on the local water supply, family’s water costs, and the load on the water treatment plant. Installing a Gray-2-Green graywater recycling system makes sense for the homeowner, the community, and the environment.

The weaving uses only left-over silk from the artisans' regular work. And of course, all silk is from organically raised, indigenous silkworms, and from traditional manual processes including natural colors.  Truly a playful. one of a kind piece of utilitarian, wearable eco-art work more than a commercial weaving.

The latest news in Haiti is that, amidst the rubble, cholera and civil unrest, there are small islands of prosperity and stability -- artisan villages that have had steady work since July 2010, producing high-quality crafts for the Heart of Haiti, a trade not aid project.  The Heart of Haiti initiative provides artists with an opportunity to make a living, feed their families and pay their children’s school fees. Already, The Heart of Haiti collection has led to employment of 750 artists in Haiti providing financial benefits for an estimated 5,000 people in the country.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and despite the devastating earthquake, people there are filled with hope and a desire to improve their lives through employment.  In a partnership with the artisans of Haiti, Macy's, The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and Fairwinds Trading, Haitians are being put back to work through sustainable projects making colorful and intricate pieces of art ranging from picture frames to vases and jewelry.

Wordless Wednesday 3-21-12 Barefoot and Wading in The Lake

Wordless Wednesday is a day for me to share an image from my green living life with you along with just a few words...or so

In keeping with Monday's Live a Little post, HJ,  Lou Lou, Ace and I went for a bike ride around the neighborhood.  We even brought our two and a half year old Chi-Poo, Ace.  He loves sitting in the basket.  We ended up down at the dock, barefoot and wading in the lake.  Well, I waded and the girls and Ace got totally wet. They decided to go for an afternoon swim, in their clothes.  Well not Ace, but you know what I mean.

So, yesterday I had an enormous amount of work to do.  I don't know about you, but I actually love working.  Even though work is play to me, at times in the past, my proclivity for work has been a source of contention for my girls and my husband.  I guess you could label me a work-a-holic but to me, it's just what makes me happy.
Still, my first priority is always my family.  Or at least that's the lip service I always give when I start to hear the, all too familiar, moans and groans from my girls and hubby that I am ignoring them.

3 Easy Ways to Reduce Your Family's Exposure to Harmful Chemicals in Your Home

Today I am heading out of Orlando and over to the west coast of Florida to meet with the Deputy Director of Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, Lindsay Dahl. To me, Ms, Dahl is a rockstar and I am actually a tee tiny tad bit nervous to meet her.

Deputy Director, Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families

Seriously. Get this, before joining the campaign for Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, Lindsay directed policy and media strategy for the Healthy Legacy Coalition of Minnesota. While she held that job she didn't do too much.  She just led the campaign for Minnesota to become the first state to ban bisphenol-A (BPA) and the fourth state to pass the beginnings of a comprehensive safer chemical policy framework.
